Slovenia is a gem in the middle of Europe. Despite being a relatively small country, it has a lot to offer. You will be amazed by its diversity, cleanliness, nature and warm-hearted people.
Alps 2 Sea Tour is a point to point tour, starting from North- East part, on the sunny side of the Alps, known as Koroška area and ending in the South-West part, in a charming little town by the Adriatic sea, named Piran. Actually, our first bike riding day will be held in Austria. Petzen mountain, just a stone throw from the Austrian-Slovenian border offers the longest flow trail in Europe and it is also a venue of the EWS (Enduro World Series). Our last riding day will be in the Italian port town Trieste. In between, we are going to be riding some of the best bike trails Slovenia has to offer. From unharmed single trails, ridge lines with scenic views, to the best bike parks and visiting some of the “must visit when in Slovenia” places, such as Ljubljana, the capital and Lake Bled on a non-biking day.
ITINERARY
As our first riding day starts in Petzen mountain (Austria), we are going to be heading towards Koroška area (northeast part of Slovenia) and check in at our first accommodation, unpack and assemble the bikes.
In case of early arrival, we are going to go for an afternoon ride. The area offers some of the best trails in the country.
Petzen bike park offers everything what every mountain biker wants. From the longest machine made flow trail in Europe (11 km) to very technical, black labeled single trails. They all have in common the fact they are super long and with over 1000 m of descend each run. To maximize the fun factor, there won’t be no pedaling this day, as we are going to be using a modern bike park lift.
After enjoying the first riding day, we are going to head on to our next accommodation, which would be in Savinja valley, about an hour drive away.
We will choose between one of the many scenic tours beneath the Kamnik Savinja Alps with stunning views, nature and fresh water all around. Only a stretch away from your accomodation lies a a group of jagged mountain peaks. With the views on a peaks over 2,000 meter highs, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps make up a perfect MTB tour for everyone.
In the afternoon, we are going to move to Ljubljana area (Domžale, Kamnik,…) and check in at our next accommodation, which is going to be our base for the next two days.
A wonderful, meadow-covered mountain plateau in the Kamnik Alps, suitable for mountain biking, since it is reachable by cable car. On the mountain plateau, you will find blooming meadows and fresh mountain air. From spring until the end of summer, the plateau is filled with the sounds of cow bells, since Velika Planina is known for alpine dairy farming and a well-preserved herders’ settlement. Among the cows and herders, you will get to know the old herders’ traditions, and enjoy fresh, homemade dairy delicacies. Numerous alpine cottages offer homemade food and a place to rest your weary legs. Velika Planina, with its long and scenic single trails, is also one of the top MTB destinations in the country.
Did you know that Slovenia is also a country with an only European capital where you can find one of the best MTB trails in the proximity of the city center? This small wooded hills (Golovec) of Slovenian subalpine region are the most popular among local mountain bikers. The vast forests which extend right from the center of our capital city Ljubljana hide numerous great trails.
So our fifth day is pedaling day as we are going to be riding the Golovec trails. The idea is to ride five of the best trails in the area, with its total lenght of about 30 km and about 750 m vertical climc/descent.
Afternoon is reserved for a non biking trip to the one of the greatest gems of Slovenia, trip to Lake Bled, where we are going to enjoy the sihgtseeing (boath ride to the island is optional), or guided tour around Ljubljana.
Our last thing before dinner is going to be the transfer to our next accommodation. We are going to Ajdovščina (southwest part of Slovenia.
A small historical town Ajdovščina lays in the Vipava valley, the southwest part of Slovenia. The area is well known as the cycling capital of West Slovenia and offers various options of bike trails, paths, and roads, suitable for all riding styles. Vipava valley is also well known for its high-end cuisine and winery.
We are going to spend the day, riding some of the best trails the area has to offer. Combining a bike shuttle and some pedaling to get the best from both sides and enjoy the area the most.
Last day of a tour! We will be slowly moving to Slovenian coast and its gem, the historical town Piran. But before we will get there, we will make a short jump across the border into Italy and ride some of the very nice trails in the area. Actually, we are going to be jumping between Slovenia and Italy several times, as the trails are located right on the border between the two countries.
